Ohio:

In a shocking case of alleged child abuse and neglect, authorities in the US state of Ohio rescued 16 children from a severely dilapidated home where they had reportedly been living in inhumane conditions for years. Investigators said the children were malnourished, surrounded by filth and had little to no interaction with the outside world. Four adults, including the children’s parents and grandparents, have now been charged with endangering the children’s lives. Officials clarified that all 16 children belong to the same family.

Police stumbled upon the children during another investigation

Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said officers had arrived at the property with a search warrant in connection with an unrelated investigation. Authorities were unaware that 16 children were living inside the house. When officers entered the property, they were stunned by what they found. Investigators later discovered that none of the children had ever been enrolled in school and very few people outside the family even knew they existed.

Children allegedly confined to a single room for years

According to investigators, the children ranged in age from 18 months to 18 years and included both boys and girls. Police believe they had been kept inside a single 12-foot by 12-foot room for nearly four years. Human waste was reportedly found inside the room and around the house, with garbage and filth covering large parts of the property.

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain said he had never witnessed such conditions in his career. “Even the animals we raise here live in better conditions than these children.” Authorities said they did not find cages inside the house but have not disclosed exactly how the children were confined inside the room.

Children were severely malnourished and unable to communicate normally

Attorney General Andy Wilson said several children struggled to speak normally due to their prolonged isolation. An 18-year-old girl with an intellectual disability was reportedly unable to write her own name. Wilson described the children’s condition by saying they “almost appeared to be feral.”

Soon after the rescue, seven children were admitted to hospitals in Columbus for treatment. Two of them had to be airlifted by helicopter due to the seriousness of their condition.ย Officials said one child remained in critical condition on Tuesday, while the others also required medical treatment and specialised care.

Four family members charged

Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer said four adults have been charged with second-degree felony child endangerment for allegedly placing the children at substantial risk of serious physical harm.

The accused are:

  • Gary Siders Jr.
  • Gary Siders Sr.
  • Christina Siders
  • Elizabeth Siders

All four appeared before a court on Wednesday, where pleas of not guilty were entered on their behalf. The court set bail at USD 300,000 for each accused. Officials said no defence attorneys had yet been appointed for them.

How did the family keep the children hidden?

Investigators said the family had lived in different parts of southern Ohio for nearly two decades. According to authorities, the family deliberately avoided obtaining medical records and government documentation for the children, making it difficult for anyone to know about their existence.ย Officials are also examining whether any previous complaints regarding the family had ever been reported to child protection agencies.

The house is located near railway tracks in the small village of Hamden, which has a population of fewer than 1,000 people. The property is surrounded by dense trees and bushes, making it relatively isolated despite being visible from the road.

Neighbours say they never saw children outside

The property was littered with discarded tyres, broken bicycles, plastic furniture, baby carriers and other junk. Neighbour Joseph Stewart said he never saw children playing outside after the family moved into the house.ย “I drive past this house every day, but I never once saw any children outside,” The Associated Press reported.

Similar case shocked the US in the past

This is not the first time the United States has witnessed a disturbing case involving prolonged abuse of children within a family. In 2019, David and Louise Turpin of California admitted to abusing their 13 children by chaining them up, starving them and denying them proper education for years. The couple was sentenced to life imprisonment after their crimes came to light when their 17-year-old daughter escaped the house in 2018 and called 911 seeking help.

Child welfare agencies now overseeing rescued children

Following the rescue, all 16 children have been placed under the temporary care of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Authorities said ensuring the children’s medical recovery, emotional well-being and long-term rehabilitation is now the immediate priority while the criminal investigation continues.
