7 September, 2026 Stock Market Updates: Sensex drops 69 points, Nifty below 23,900 as oil edges higher


Indian equity benchmark indices, the Sensex and Nifty, opened in the red on Wednesday as oil prices edged higher after fresh attacks in the US-Iran conflict. While the 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 69.38 points or 0.09 per cent to start the session at 76,446.05, the Nifty opened with a drop of 14.55 points to 23,883.15. In the last trading session, the Sensex closed at 76,515.43 and the Nifty 50 at 23,897.70. Similarly, the broader indices traded in the red in the early trading session. While the BSE Midcap Select Index was down by 75.01 points, the BSE Smallcap Select Index dropped 2.46 points or 0.03 per cent, to trade in the red at 9,292.81.ย 

From the Sensex pack, BEL, Eternal, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel and Adani Ports were the gainers, with BEL leading the pack by gaining 0.43 per cent in the early trade. On the other hand, Infosys, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, TCS and Hindustan Unilever were among the losers, with Infosys falling 2.39 per cent.ย ย

In early trade, market breadth was positive, with 1,603 stocks advancing against 1,535 stocks declining on the NSE. 118 stocks remained unchanged.ย 

“Sentiment is fragile amid surging crude oil prices driven by USโ€“Iran tensions and elevated US Treasury yields, which have kept risk appetite subdued despite Indiaโ€™s strong Q1 FY27 GDP growth of 7.8% and robust GST collections,” said Devarsh Vakil, Head of Prime Research at HDFC Securities.

What did Gift Nifty indicate?

Gift Nifty, an early indicator for the Nifty 50, indicated a flat start today as it opened with a drop of 10.5 points at 23,999.50, compared to the previous close of 24,010. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained sellers on Friday and offloaded equities worth Rs 3,111.94 crore on September 4, 2026. However, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) remained buyers and bought equities worth Rs 8,930.12 crore.ย

Asian stocks rallied after the US jobs report came in much stronger than expected, while fresh attacks in the US-Iran conflict are keeping oil prices elevated.ย Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 1,278.06 points or 1.93 per cent to 66,299 at the time of writing the report. However, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropped 266.87 points or 1.05 per cent. South Korea’s Kospi jumped 262.33 points or 3.92 per cent, and Shanghai’s SSE Composite index was down by 9.42 points or 0.24 per cent.ย ย
