At least 10 people were killed and about two dozens injured after a mass shooting at a secondary school in the Canadian town of Tumbler Ridge on Wednesday, CTV news reported. Police said oneย suspect is dead but released few details, adding that information on the victims, motive, and circumstances has not yet been confirmed. Authorities said updates would be shared once details are verified.
Around 24 people have been hospitalised with injuries, authorities said.
In a statement, police confirmed the incident was ongoing and that multiple people had been hurt, although the exact number of victims had not been officially confirmed.
“As of 1:20 pm, the Tumbler Ridge RCMP are currently on scene of a confirmed active shooter incident at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School,”ย police said in a news release, as quoted by local media.
In another update issued shortly after 3:15 pm, police said, โThe original suspect is believed to have been located deceased. Work continues to determine whether a second suspect was involved and the total number of victims involved.โ
An emergency alert sent to mobile phones in and around Tumbler Ridge described the suspect as โa female in a dress with brown hair.โ
Residents were urged to remain indoors and avoid the area.
โThose in the Tumbler Ridge area are asked to stay inside, lock your doors, and refrain from leaving your home or business at this time,โ police said. โAll others need to avoid the area and follow police directions and restrictions.โ
