Amid the ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, Iran has claimed that it struck three UK and US oil tankers in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, Iranโs Revolutionary Guard said the tankers were hit with missiles.
Marshall islands-flagged tanker reportedly hit
A projectile is reported to have struck a Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, killing one person. Details regarding the vessel and the extent of the damage remain limited. The alleged strikes have not yet been confirmed by either the United States or the United Kingdom.
Retaliation for โoperation Epic Furyโ
The claimed attacks come as Iran continues its retaliation following what has been referred to as โOperation Epic Fury,โ which reportedly resulted in the killing of Iranโs Supreme Leader.
The maritime claims mark a significant escalation in tensions in one of the worldโs most strategically important shipping routes, though official confirmation from Western authorities is still awaited.
Oil tanker attacked off Omanโs Musandam peninsula
Meanwhile, a Palau-flagged oil tanker carrying 15 Indian crew members came under attack from the Iranian military off Omanโs Musandam peninsula, with four people injured in the strike, Omani authorities said on Sunday. Iran has carried out a wave of attacks mainly targeting Israel and American military bases in several Gulf countries after the United States and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday.
Details of the tanker strike
Omanโs Maritime Security Center said the oil tanker Skylight was attacked around five nautical miles north of the port of Khasab in the Musandam peninsula, according to the Oman News Agency. The entire crew of 20 individuals, comprising 15 Indian nationals and five Iranians, was safely evacuated.
Four crew members sustained injuries of varying degrees and were provided medical care.
India in touch with authorities
People familiar with the incident indicated that New Delhi is in touch with the relevant authorities. The Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday that India is deeply concerned about recent developments in Iran and the Gulf region.
โWe urge all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritise the safety of civilians,โ it said.
โDialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues. Sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected,โ it added.
