Selena Gomez has opened up about her arduous mental health journey.
ย
In a latest appearance in a podcast alongside her record producer husband Benny Blanco, the singer-actress, 33, recalled being โmisdiagnosedโ before finally receiving her bipolar disorder diagnosis.
ย
“I knew something was wrong, but I think I was misdiagnosed,” Gomez said. “People were just assuming, and I would try multiple therapists. And thatโs why it is hard. It is actually really hard when weโre talking about these things. And for me to go get a therapist, all of it is so f—ing complicated.”
ย
She further detailedย how finding the right diagnosis and treatments took going through “four different rehabs” and emphasised how important it is to remember that “you canโt just give up.”
ย
Blanco, 37, noted that she still occasionally has โmoments where sheโs having mania and she doesnโt know.”
ย
“Sheโll start to realise sheโs having it after itโs happening, and sometimes she doesnโt even remember when itโs happening,” Blanco, who wed Gomez in September, explained.

“Itโs such a delicate thing because youโre not supposed to technically talk to that person about it while theyโre deep in it. And itโs like, even dating her and sheโs so hyperaware, sheโll be like, ‘I think Iโm feeling a little manic.’ “
ย
In response, Gomez made it clear that those “moments of mania” are never something sheโs ashamed of.
ย
“Iโm not ashamed at all because I can catch them a bit quicker,” she emphasised. “But it is helpful to have a partner that will understand where the temperature is at and meet you where you are, and then you gradually understand whatโs happening.”
ย
As time goes on and she continues to better understand how her bipolar disorder affects her everyday life, the โCalm Downโ singer said that sheโs been able to live her life more โfreelyโ than ever before.
