Nitish Kumar resigns from Bihar Legislative Assembly

Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar has resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council today, according to sources close to the Chief Minister. The move follows his unopposed election to the Rajya Sabha earlier this month and comes just as the 14-day constitutional deadline to vacate one of his legislative seats was set to expire.

ย

Sanjay Kumar Jha, the JD(U) national working president, had previously confirmed that the resignation would follow the stipulated timeline, though he remained tight-lipped when pressed on exactly when the 75-year-old veteran might actually step down as Chief Minister. Kumar, who has become synonymous with Biharโ€™s top office over the last two decades, is expected to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament in the upper house on April 9.

ย

During his tenure, Kumar has demonstrated that he is the master of political survival as he passes through the “revolving door” of alliances with both the BJP and Mahagathbandhan. His latest achievement is that he led the NDA to a landslide victory in 2025, making it a record tenth time he is taking his oath of office. However, he recently reaffirmed his commitment to the development of the state by giving his “guidance” to whoever will take over from him.

ย

Speculation regarding his successor is currently centred on Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. As the leader of the BJP legislature party and a prominent figure within the Kushwaha community, Choudhary appears to have Kumarโ€™s backing. During the recent Samriddhi Yatra, the outgoing Chief Minister was seen publicly endorsing his deputy, urging the crowds to get behind him.

ย

The transition marks a notable shift for Bihar, as one of its longest-serving and most polarising figures prepares to return to the national stage in New Delhi.
