TVK seeks tight security for Vijay; writes to Amit Shah

A senior leader of the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Wednesday has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking enhanced security for party founder and actor Vijay amid concerns over alleged lapses during his election campaign.

ย

CTR Nirmal Kumar, Joint General Secretary of the party, highlighted security concerns in a letter addressed to the Union Home Ministry, stating that Vijayโ€”who is currently under โ€˜Yโ€™ category security coverโ€”requires stronger protection as he campaigns for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

ย

Vijay formally launched his campaign on March 30 after filing his nomination from the Perambur constituency. Although the Election Commission had permitted him to campaign in Perambur, Kolathur, and Villivakkam on the same day, he addressed rallies only in Perambur and Kolathur. The scheduled campaign in Villivakkam was cancelled abruptly.

ย

Party functionaries attributed the cancellation to inadequate security arrangements, particularly during Vijayโ€™s Kolathur campaign. A formal complaint regarding the alleged lapses has also been submitted to the EC.

ย

ย

In his letter, Nirmal Kumar pointed to instances of crowd mismanagement and lack of police coordination. He stated that Vijayโ€™s vehicle was stuck for a prolonged period due to heavy crowds, allegedly because of โ€œcomplete failureโ€ by the Chennai Police in ensuring proper protection, traffic regulation and route management.

ย

โ€œDespite multiple requests to the police for adequate arrangements, no effective action has been taken. Given his public profile and the scale of response to his campaign, proper security must be ensured,โ€ the letter said.

ย

The TVK leader urged the Home Ministry to issue necessary directions to state authorities to strengthen security arrangements during Vijayโ€™s campaign events across the state.

ย

Notably, the letter was also addressed to โ€œUnion Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla.โ€ However, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who previously held the post, is currently serving as the Governor of Manipur with additional charge of Nagaland. The present Union Home Secretary is Govind Mohan.
