Virat Kohli had a bit of an off-day with the bat in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2026 clash against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday; however, the batting maestro shattered a major T20 world record despite his blip. Kohli made 15 from 11 balls before Sakib Hussain got him caught at covers. The wicket further dented RCB’s hopes of chasing a mammoth 256 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, as they had already lost Venkatesh Iyer too.
While the RCB openers fell in the powerplay, they gave the team a flying start in the chase. Iyer, who retained his spot despite captain Rajat Patidar coming in, made 44 from just 19 balls in a stroke-filled knock that was laced with four sixes and as many fours.ย
While Iyer scored at a brisk rate, Kohli also hit a couple of fours as RCB raced past 50 in just 3.5 overs. This helped Kohli achieve a new T20 world record.
Kohli creates record for most 50-plus stands
The RCB maestro Kohli has now created the record for being involved in the most number of fifty-plus stands in T20 cricket, breaking the record previously held by England’s Alex Hales. Coming into the clash against the SRH, the 37-year-old was tied with the England opener on 210 fifty-plus stands and got past him in Hyderabad.ย

Kohli involved in banter with Travis Head
There was more to watch for than just Iyer and Kohli scoring runs in the powerplay. The former RCB captain had a verbal banter with SRH opener Travis Head as he asked him to bowl and mocked him by gesturing that he was usually used as an Impact sub. Head came in to bowl in the last and got RCB skipper Rajat Patidar in the 19th over.ย
Things didn’t seem to settle between the two after the match as Kohli avoided a handshake with Head, seemingly being angry with the Australian as he greeted other SRH players but ignoring Head.
SRH win but fail to book top-two spot
SRH won the match against the RCB by 55 runs. SRH batted first and posted a huge 255/4 after Abhishek Sharma (56), Ishan Kishan (79), Heinrich Klaasen (51) and Nitish Reddy (29) produced some stellar knocks. The RCB bowlers were put to the sword, and no one found an easy time out in the middle.
SRH needed to restrict RCB to 165 and win the match by a minimum of 90 runs to take their NRR past RCB and book a top-two spot. However, RCB batted smartly to ensure they posted the requisite runs.
