Star West Indies cricketer quietly announced ODI retirement as head coach Daren Sammy reveals | Cricket

New Delhi:

Former West Indies captain Jason Holder has quietly announced his retirement from ODI cricket, as head coach Daren Sammy revealed. He confirmed that the all-rounder is still in contention to play Tests, but also wants to focus on franchise cricket.ย

โ€œYes, Jason is still in the mix for Tests. I know he’s retired from ODI cricket. He has spoken about his interest, but obviously you know he’s a franchise player as well. So, it’s us talking about, you know, availability, where he fits, but yeah, he’s made it clear that he’s still interested in Test cricket,โ€ Sammy told Wisden.ย

Notably, the 34-year-old has represented West Indies in 138 ODIs, scoring 2237 runs at an average of 24.85. With the ball, Holder claimed 159 wickets at an economy rate of 5.50. After the Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard era, Holder proved decisive with the bat in the lower order and also as a fifth-bowling option and could have been a valuable option for the team in the ODI World Cup next year.

Hence, the timing of the retirement is very surprising. However, many of the cricketers, such as Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Naveen-ul-Haq, have opted out of ODI cricket in recent times to focus on the other two formats and Holder joined the same race.ย
