Tanya Chaudhary drew major attention after smashing the women’s hammer throw national record on Thursday at the Indian Athletics Series Final, delivering a standout performance ahead of the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
The Indian Athletics Series Final at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi saw some of India’s elite athletics talent in action. Several athletes got themselves some game time to hone their skills ahead of the all-important Asian Games, where they would be challenged by the best athletes of Asia.
Tanya smashes hammer throw national record
Representing Uttar Pradesh, the 22-year-old Tanya launched the metal head and chain for a distance of 68.35m, bettering state compatriot Anushka Yadav’s national record of 67.02m, which she set in June.
Anushka finished second with 66.34m.
Tanya and Anushka train together in Baghpat, UP, under different coaches, and both are part of India’s Asian Games contingent.
The National Federation made the athletics series a lucrative opportunity for athletes, as the winner of each of the 30 events would pocket INR 1 lakh. As a result, Tanya received the same prize money.
Following the event, Tanya revealed that she has been chasing the national record for the past three years, saying, “My previous personal best is 63.91m. I have done 65m-plus two-three times (at the inter-university level), but those were not official. Now, I am able to do it (break national record). It is a new beginning. Normally, I used to be nervous. But I was focused on my technique today.”

Apart from Tanya’s heroics, Avinash Sable sealed a major victory at the men’s 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8 minutes 32.39 seconds in his first distance race in over a year and won INR 1 lakh for finishing first.
Sable had won just one race, the 5000m race in Belgium in August, after undergoing ACL surgery in 2025. He had won gold in the 3000m steeplechase and silver in the 5000m at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
Sable is also named as part of India’s contingent at the 2026 Asian Games
