Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed that retirement was something that came to mind after Portugal’s World Cup 2026 campaign ended. But he is determined to continue playing for the Portugal national football team.
Ronaldo was in action for Portugal at the FIFA World Cup 2026, but their campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion with a Round of 16 defeat to eventual champions Spain. The Portuguese star’s run is considered his final appearance in the global football showpiece.
Ronaldo had pondered about retirement
Ronaldo was questioned on whether he had considered walking away after the World Cup. He agreed, saying he always thought about his decisions, but he chose to keep himself available for the national team.
“Yes, I did. Of course, I’m always thinking about my decisions, my future, the present also. I’m a thinker; you have to think. This is why you see me here now; it means I will continue. I still believe that I’m able to help the national team reach what they want. I think I can give the national team my support, not only through the goals, but also outside of football,” Ronaldo said.

Ronaldo reveals his immediate goals
Ronaldo also opened up about his ambitions, saying that although he is determined to break the record, he does not view it as an obsession.
“My goal is twofold: to score my 1,000th goal and to win the UEFA Nations League. I know I will achieve it, but it is not an obsession. The rest is about enjoying it, but yes, I really want to achieve this record,” the Portuguese striker added.
The 41-year-old is expected to start for Portugal in the Nations League Group D match against Wales on Friday, September 25. The match will kick off at 12:15 AM IST.
