Indian tennis prodigy Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi scripted history at the Chennai Open by becoming the first Indian woman since Sania Mirza in 2012 to reach a WTA Tour-level singles quarterfinal
Indian teen tennis star Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi made history on Wednesday after becoming the first woman since the legendary Sania Mirza to reach a WTA Tour-level singles quarterfinal. Sania reached the quarters back in 2012, and Maaya ended an almost 15-year wait after reaching the final eight, marking a significant chapter in the nation’s tennis history.
Maaya had earlier broken one of Sania’s longstanding records after becoming the youngest woman to win a W35-level singles title by winning her maiden professional singles title at the W35 Lagos tournament in Portugal. The Indian tennis icon held the record for 22 years before Maaya broke it.
Maya becomes first since Sania to achieve feat
Maaya delivered a dominant performance, securing a straight-sets 6-4, 6-3 victory over Polish star Weronika Falkowska in the round two clash at Chennai Open. No Indian tennis player could go beyond the second round in the tournament’s last two editions until Maaya did so in 2026, igniting hopes for a brighter future in the game.
Before Maaya, it was Sania who had reached the final eight stage at Pattaya Open in February 2012.
The young Indian tennis player’s breakthrough performance in Chennai was the latest achievement in the rapid rise on the professional circuit this season.
Maaya sealed hard-fought win to make history
The round two match, however, was not simple for Maaya, as she made unforced errors and double faults. Maaya’s start was erratic as well, as she opened with a double fault and dropped her serve after a series of unforced errors.
But her attacking instincts and ability to capitalise on Falkowska, who struggled with her returns, proved decisive.
The young Indian tennis player will be in action in the women’s doubles event as well, pairing up with Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty to face the Czech duo of Aneta Kladivova and Aneta Laboutkova on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
Maaya will also be in action in the women’s singles quarterfinal event against US’ Robin Montgomery on Friday, November 5, 2026.
