Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has addressed Cristiano Ronaldo’s shock retirement from international football, insisting he has no regrets over the striker’s decision to step away from the national team.
Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has broken his silence on Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden retirement from international football, saying that the latter’s decision took him aback but said that he did not regret or feel guilty about his exit.
Ronaldo announced his sudden departure from International football on Thursday, calling time on an illustrious 23-year football career with the Portugal national team.
The decision followed a dispute with manager Jorge Jesus, which resulted in a 30-day suspension and a โฌ255 fine imposed by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after he walked out on the national team.
‘It was in his head’, says Jesus
Speaking to the media while announcing Portugal’s squad for the Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales, Jesus said he does not regret or feel guilty over Ronaldo’s departure, insisting that the decision was influenced by the striker’s own thoughts and uncertainty over his role and future call-ups.
“No, maybe I rushed things, but not because of me. It was in his head; more call-ups, fewer call-ups.
“We also talked about it a few times. And if it was going to happen. But no, I don’t feel guilty about anything regarding his departure. I respect his decision,” Jesus said.
Jesus expected Ronaldo to continue
The Portuguese manager added that he expected Ronaldo to continue with the national team and had every intention of selecting him in future squads.
But he also acknowledged that the player felt it was the right time to step away and that the decision deserved respect. Jesus further paid tribute to Ronaldo’s contributions towards Portuguese football and called him a role model for younger generations.
“I thought he would return. I certainly intended to call him up.
“He felt that this was the right moment to leave, and that must be respected. We can never overlook what he has meant to Portugal, what he has contributed to the country, or the fact that he serves as a symbol for younger players,” the Portuguese manager added.
Ronaldo stepped away from international football but is still active in the club football scene as he continues his association with Saudi Pro League outfit Al Nassr.
