โ€˜Aadiย Pattamย Thediย Paarthuย Vedhaikanumย Kannaiyyaโ€™ goes a popular film song of the 1990s. The line translates to: โ€˜seek out the seeds, for it isย Aadiย season, the best for sowing seedsโ€™. Timed with the sowing season is an upcoming seeds exhibition showcasing as many as 100 traditional varieties of paddy seeds to help farmers make judicious choices for the upcoming harvest.

โ€œAsย vidhaippuย kaalamย (sowing season) starts, we wanted to bring seeds of traditional paddy, millets, native vegetables and tuber varieties likeย vettiraliย valli, and air potato. This will help farmers in the region choose the right seeds that suits the soil type of theย Konguย belt and also the season,โ€ saysย Alageswariย S, founder ofย Iyalย Vaagai, a 15-year-old environmental movement that networks with farmers in the region to switch to organic farming and sustainable lifestyle.

Theirย Nammaย Ooruย Sandhai, held every second Sunday, brings farmers together to sell organically-grown fruits and vegetables, greens, cold pressed oils, millets, to name a few.

Whileย seedย banks are considered a priceless resource that could one day prevent a worldwide food crisis, centuries ago, India was home to more than one lakh rice varieties. The varieties that encompassed a stunning diversity in taste, nutrition, pest-resistantย andย adaptability to a rangeย ofย weather conditions that is especially crucial now in the ageย ofย climate changeย andย natural disasters.

Alageswari talksย ofย someย ofย the lesser known paddy varietiesย ofย Tamil Nadu likeย malumulingiย orย thooyamalli, a traditional aromatic rice variety resembling jasmine buds. โ€œIt is believed to withstand heavy rains. As water keeps rising in the field, these paddy plants keep growing taller. There are recordsย ofย how people have harvested this rice variety by moving about in the field using aย parisalย (coracle). Though rice is a rain-dependant crop, there are varieties likeย vaadan sambaย that can grow without much water. There is alsoย kuzhiadichaan,ย karuthakar,ย andย kullakarย that grow faster to reachย kuruvaiย stage unlike the popular belief that fast harvest is possible only with hybrid rice,โ€ she explains adding that the objective is to bridge the gap between farmersย andย consumers.

The event features performances likeย paraiaatam,ย silambaatam,ย surul vaal,ย andย karagamย that shines the light on traditional art formsย andย artistes, as well as events whereย seedย conservationists educate farmers on how to source the rightย seeds. โ€œThis platform makes nativeย seedsย accessible to farmers. They will share success storiesย ofย farmers who switched to native varietyย andย reaped benefits. There will be programmes on marketing help to farmers besides awareness on how to choose traditionalย seedsย from genetically modified ones.โ€

The exhibition also turns the spotlight on climate change that poses a big challenge for farmersย andย how they can cope with diseases in plants with homeopathic medicines. โ€œThis is an alternative to commercial pesticides which is a big burden off their shoulders. There will be sessions on howย seedsย ofย pepper, peas, mustardย andย fenugreek are effective in treatmentย ofย coldย andย fever too.โ€

The farmerโ€™s market is a no-plastic zone, where consumers are encouraged to bring utensilsย andย eco-friendly bags to take away their purchase. There are workshops on how to make cakesย andย biscuits from millets, jackfruit noodles, mango candy made without colouring agents or preservatives. โ€œWe market millet brownies made with jaggery to ensure healthy snacking. We donโ€™t allow chemicals to enter the Sandhai, be it in the formย ofย plastic bags or coconut oil soaps made using caustic soda that evaporatesย andย pollutes air. Instead, we promoteย thaenmilaguย soaps made with beeswax,ย andย medicinal essence extracted from plants likeย kuppaimeniย andย neem leaves,โ€ she says, adding, โ€œEvery single step counts to build a movement towards healthy living.โ€
