Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma has been fined 25% of his match fees for breaching the IPL code of conduct in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. For the unversed, SRH registered their first win of IPL 2026, with a thumping 65-run win, even as Abhishek played his part, smashing 48 runs off just 21 deliveries with four fours and as many sixes.
But his dismissal was contentiousย and the batter showedย his dissent towards the umpire’s decision. Varun Chakaravarthy took a diving catch and the ball seemed to have touched the ground, as the incident happened in the ninth over of the innings. However, the third umpire deemed the catch to be legal which the batter disagreed and expressed his disappointment while walking off.
The southpaw has been charged of Level 1 offence and he accepted the sanction as well. “Abhishek Sharma, All-rounder, Sunrisers Hyderabad, has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Thursday.
“He admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.3 and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the official release from the IPL stated.
SRH register comfortable win over KKR
As far as the match is concerned, it was a near-perfect performance from the Orange Army as they batted well to post 226 runs on the board. Their openers got them off to a flier and then Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy helped them go past the 220-run mark despite the collapse in the middle overs.
In response, KKR were no match to SRH bowlers at all as they succumbed to a heavy defeat after getting bowled out for just 161 runs in 16 overs.
