AI canโ€™t be art: Leonardo DiCaprio

Artificial intelligence continues to spark widespread debate with some viewing it as a significant technological leap and others remaining sceptical.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio is the latest to join the debate surrounding AI.

ย

Offering a measured critique, the โ€œTitanicโ€ star stated that AI could be a useful “enhancement tool” but ultimately lacks the humanity necessary to create genuine art.

ย

“It could be an enhancement tool for a young filmmaker to do something weโ€™ve never seen before…I think anything that is going to be authentically thought of as art has to come from the human being,” DiCaprio said in an interview.

The actor gave examples of the songs made with AI tools and said they are quickly forgotten.

ย

“Havenโ€™t you heard these songs that are mashups that are just absolutely brilliant and you go, โ€˜Oh my God, this is Michael Jackson doing the Weeknd,โ€™ or โ€˜This is funk from the A Tribe Called Quest song ‘Bonita Applebum,’ done in, you know, a sort of Al Green soul-song voice, and itโ€™s brilliant.โ€™ And you go, โ€˜Cool’.โ€

ย

“But then it gets its 15 minutes of fame and it just dissipates into the ether of other internet junk. Thereโ€™s no anchoring to it. Thereโ€™s no humanity to it, as brilliant as it is,” he said.

ย

DiCaprio’s latest work is “One Battle After Another”, which released in September. It was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and also featured Teyana Taylor.
