Anurag Thakur, Smriti Irani may return in Nitin Nabinโ€™s BJP team

Former Union ministers Anurag Thakur and Smriti Irani are expected to return to prominent roles within the Bharatiya Janata Partyโ€™s national structure, with party president Nitin Nabin set to unveil his new team. The long-anticipated organisational overhaul aims to strike a clear balance between veteran experience and fresh talent, bringing the average age of the executive down to around 50. Key priorities for the revamped lineup include increased representation for women and younger leaders, alongside a balanced regional distribution across the country.

The potential inclusion of Thakur and Irani marks one of the most significant moves in Nabinโ€™s initial major reshuffle since assuming the leadership. Thakur, the Lok Sabha MP for Hamirpur, previously served in Cabinet positions covering Information and Broadcasting as well as Youth Affairs and Sports, alongside junior ministerial roles in Finance and Corporate Affairs. Irani, who represented Amethi in Parliament between 2019 and 2024 and previously held several high-profile Cabinet portfolios, brings extensive organisational background, having formerly headed the party’s women’s wing, the BJP Mahila Morcha.

This strategic refresh follows Nabinโ€™s appointment earlier this year as the partyโ€™s youngest national president at the age of 45, a move widely viewed as signalling a generational shift. The restructuring goes beyond routine administrative updates, as the party seeks to align its central apparatus with upcoming electoral challenges, notably the 2027 state assembly elections. In preparation, Nabin has begun gathering feedback from grassroots cadres, including direct consultations with around 20 parliamentarians from Uttar Pradesh to address local caste dynamics and party morale.

By pairing younger appointees with seasoned, nationally recognised figures like Thakur and Irani, Nabin aims to merge continuity with generational change. The incoming leadership structure is expected to set the tone for the party’s broader national strategy, combining a refreshed youth and female demographic with experienced political strategists ahead of the next major electoral cycle.
