April Bank Holiday: Are banks open or closed on April 1? Here’s what you need to know

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released a list of bank holidays for April. According to the central bank’s list, April 1, 2026 (Wednesday) is a bank holiday. This holiday is due to it being the first day of the 2026-27 financial year. However, employees will be present in the banks to close their yearly accounts and complete important financial tasks.

Banks to remain open for the public in these cities

Today, banks complete internal financial work such as closing accounts for the previous fiscal year, data verification, preparing balance sheets, and conducting annual audits. According to the central bank, banks are closed on April 1 in all cities across the country except Aizawl, Gangtok, Kohima, Ranchi, Shillong, and Shimla.

It should be noted that the RBI has divided these holidays into three categories: Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holidays.

Banks will remain closed in cities like Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada.

Apart from this, there will be holidays in different states between April 14 and 16 due to festivals such as Bihu, Vishu, Tamil New Year, and Ambedkar Jayanti. Banking services will also be reduced in some states on April 20 and 21. However, digital services will continue even when bank branches are closed. Customers can send or withdraw money through UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and ATMs.
