Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has reportedly emerged as a potential challenger to Gianni Infantino ahead of FIFA’s 2027 presidential election.
Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has reportedly been encouraged to challenge Gianni Infantino for FIFA Presidency ahead of the 2027 election, making the road to election for President particularly interesting.
Infantino has faced criticism over several decisions during his tenure as FIFA president, including the controversial FFE model and other disputed decisions. Meanwhile, Wenger is expected to emerge as a strong challenger in the 2027 FIFA presidential election if he decides to enter the race.
Arsene Wenger approached to join FIFA Presidential race
According to British newspaper The Times, Wenger was approached by senior figures in the game about standing against Infantino in the 2027 Presidency election. They sought an alternative for the current FIFA President, who is seeking another term.
Wenger currently serves as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development and has been actively working with the Federation since leaving his managerial career behind. He joined FIFA in 2019 after departing from Arsenal in 2018 to bring his coaching, administration and player development experience to the federation.
Infantino’s presidency has seen several controversial decisions being made, leading to calls for investigation, transparency and accountability.
Notably, Wenger had denied any involvement in the disputed FIFA FFE plan, which involved selling stakes in future World Cup tournaments to private investors. When the project was pulled back, he had welcomed the decision and called the proposal’s withdrawal “necessary and beyond question.”
The former Arsenal manager could attract major backing from those seeking a new direction for world football’s governing body.
Why support for Infantino remains disputed?
While Infantino can be credited for expanding football’s global reach, increasing revenues and bringing reforms to help grow the sport, opinion within the football community remains split due to some of his disputed decisions.
The next FIFA presidential election will take place on March 18, 2027, at the 77th FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco.
