BCCI to finalise West Indies squad: Is this Agarkar’s last selection meeting? Pandya, Pant in focus

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors will meet on Wednesday to make key decisions over India’s squad for the upcoming West Indies series at home. The spotlight, however, remains on Ajit Agarkar, whose tenure as chairman of the selection committee will wrap up soon.

India also has some players yearning for a comeback, and the West Indies series could be an ideal spot for the fit-again Hardik Pandya, while Rishabh Pant awaits an opportunity in white-ball cricket.

Is this Agarkar’s last selection meeting?

Agarkar’s contract as chairman of the selection committee runs till October 4. According to PTI, a one-year extension does not seem to be on the cards as no member of the BCCI’s top brass has contacted the former Indian cricketer.

Sources added that Agarkar intends to mail a thank-you note to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia after the squad selection for the West Indies series, thanking him for providing the opportunity to serve as chief selector.

While there is still time, there seems to be no communication bridge between the BCCI and Agarkar regarding the extension.

Will Hardik Pandya finally return?

The Agarkar‑led selection committee must resolve the ODI squad arrangement, as the 50‑over series is set to clash with India’s commitments at the 2026 Asian Games, ruling several players out of contention. The focus is also on all-rounder Pandya, who is picked for India A’s squad for the three-match one-day series against Australia A in Puducherry.

Given his lengthy injury layoff, the selection committee must carefully decide whether to field him in 50‑over action.

If Pandya is unavailable, India’s lack of seam-bowling all-rounders would be a troubling issue for the selectors. With Nitish Reddy in the Asian Games, alternatives like Suryansh Shedge and Venkatesh Iyer are also out due to injuries, creating a major selection headache.

Time for a Pant comeback in white-ball?

With Ishan Kishan in the Asian Games squad, the second wicketkeeper-batter position remains wide open, and this is where Pant could shine. An abysmal IPL form cost him his place in India’s white-ball setup, but he could be in consideration for the role.

But Pant is not alone, as he may face competition from Dhruv Jurel, and if he misses his chance, the board may send him to lead the ‘Rest of India’ squad in the Irani Cup.

The Shreyas Iyer & Jasprit Bumrah replacement

With Iyer serving as India captain at the Asian Games, the team requires a stable middle-order batter who can hold the fort at No. 4. CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad could be the man for the role, and RCB captain Rajat Patidar can be an alternative middle-order performer.

For Bumrah, who will be in the Asian Games, Mohammed Siraj could be recalled to the ODI fold, joining the pace-bowling arsenal alongside Gurnoor Brar, Prasidh Krishna and Prince Yadav.
