The BCCI placed Vaibhav Sooryavanshiโs career development high on the agenda during a review meeting in Mumbai, attended by head coach Gambhir, captains Iyer and Gill, president Mithun Manhas, secretary Saikia, and COE chief VVS Laxman.
The rapid rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in professional cricket has prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to monitor him closely and nurture his skills for long-term development. The Board envisions the 15โyearโold opener following a career trajectory reminiscent of Sachin Tendulkar, building a legacy of his own in Indian cricket.
Vaibhav’s career development was among the key agendas in the BCCI’s high-level review meeting on Thursday. The meet was attended by head coach Gautam Gambhir, T20 captain Shreyas Iyer, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, board president Mithun Manhas, secretary Devajit Saikia and Head of Cricket and NCA VVS Laxman.
Chairman of selectors VVS Laxman, however, was a notable absentee from the meeting that took place in Mumbai.
‘Want Vaibhav to continue like Sachin’
Speaking to the reporters after the BCCI meeting, Saikia said that the board saw Vaibhav as a genuine long-term prospect. He further explained that they want the 15-year-old or any cricketer of his stature to serve the way Sachin and other legends did, which is why they will closely monitor every stage of his career.
More from Firstcricket“We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or any player of his stature to continue and serve like Sachin Tendulkar did for the country, or other players who in the past became legends.
“So we look at Vaibhav in a very serious manner. Heโs monitored from every angle and every step he is taking forward in his international career. The BCCI is taking a very close look at his future,” Saikia said.
BCCI also monitoring other prospects
Saikia further noted that the BCCI is not only monitoring Vaibhav Sooryavanshi but also keeping a close watch on 10โ15 other emerging cricketers, all of whom are part of a targeted group, with COE head Laxman being involved in the development.
โWe are looking at all the players, not only Vaibhav’s relevance, but there are about 10โ15 players who are in our targeted group.
โThey are constantly monitored by our COE head, VVS Laxman, who is taking keen interest in their future and their training and skill development,โ Saikia said.
Vaibhav is currently in action for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy and was also named in India’s T20 squad for the upcoming Afghanistan series, starting September 13 in Delhi.
