Businessman says he ‘begged’ Rajpal Yadav to return his money

Renowned Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav walked out of Tihar jail on Tuesday after he was granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court in a 9-crore debt case. According to reports, the actor loaned Rs 5 crore from a businessman for his 2012 film โ€˜Ata Pata Laapataโ€™.

ย

The debt case has been running for 14 years.

ย

The businessman has now been vocal about his side of the story. Speaking with a media outlet during an interview, Madhav Gopal Agrawal shared insights about his first meeting with actor Rajpal. Madhav even shared that during the initial period, he went to the actorโ€™s house, begged and cried in front of him to return his money.

ย

The businessman said that he lent Rajpal the money, which he himself had borrowed, adding that he repeatedly went to the actor, begging him to specify a date for preparing the new agreement.

ย

Rajpal Yadav told the businessman that his film was nearly complete and that, without further funding, โ€œeverything would go to wasteโ€, Madhav said, adding that when he denied providing the funding, Radha Yadav, the actorโ€™s wife, made an emotional appeal via messages. In the end, the businessman relented and agreed to assist Rajpal.

ย

ย

According to the businessman, ย the agreement explicitly stated that the repayment would remain unaffected by the filmโ€™s box-office performance, its censorship certification, or any other external factors. He then claimed that Rajpal Yadav was contractually obligated to return the agreed sum on schedule and had provided a personal guarantee for the debt.

ย

When the deadline passed without payment, Madhav approached the actor, and Rajpal reportedly claimed a lack of funds, leading to the creation of three supplementary agreements and the issuance of fresh cheques.

ย

The dispute escalated following a music launch for Rajpalโ€™s movie by Amitabh Bachchan. The businessman discovered that, per the original contract, the film’s negatives and the outstanding balance were meant to be handed over upon completion of the movie. Consequently, he moved to the court to halt the film’s release. To this action, the actor insisted that repayment was impossible prior to the film’s release; the parties eventually reached a settlement, allowing the stay on the release to be lifted. However, the film subsequently failed at the box office.

ย

By 2013, with no resolution in sight, Madhav returned to the court. Following judicial intervention, a settlement of Rs 10.40 crore was agreed upon. Although Rajpal Yadav submitted several cheques to settle the debt, they were all dishonoured, leading to further legal proceedings.
