FIR against Mamata over ‘provocative speech’ at Kolkata protest

An FIR has been lodged against Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee at Hare Street police station, alleging that she delivered a “provocative” and “misleading” speech during a public meeting in Kolkata’s Esplanade area earlier this year. According to police sources, the complaint was filed on June 7 by an individual identified as Tushar Kanti Das. The FIR pertains to an incident that allegedly took place on March 9, 2026, during a gathering held at the TMC’s protest venue near Metro Channel in Dharmatala between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.

The complainant has alleged that remarks made by Banerjee during the meeting had the potential to disturb law and order and disrupt communal harmony in the state. The FIR states that the speech was “misleading and provocative” in nature and could have incited members of the public to commit criminal acts, thereby posing a threat to public security and the democratic framework.

Based on the complaint, a case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. These include Section 196(1), which pertains to promoting enmity between different groups or disturbing communal harmony; Section 351(2), relating to criminal intimidation or incitement; and Section 352, which deals with intentional insult or provocation aimed at breaching peace.

Police at Hare Street police station have initiated an investigation into the matter. Sub-Inspector Himadri Kanjilal has been assigned to probe the case.

The development comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal following the Assembly elections. Political observers believe the FIR could further intensify the ongoing confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition in the state.

As of now, there has been no official response from the Trinamool Congress or Mamata regarding the allegations.
