At least five people were reportedly killed in a shooting in the northern German town of Stade on Monday, according to police and local media reports. Police said a male suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. However, officials have not yet released the identities of the victims or shared further details about the shooting.
The incident took place near a youth facility on Dankersstraรe, where police launched a large security operation soon after receiving reports of gunfire.
Police ask public to stay away
Authorities have urged people to avoid the area and follow instructions issued by emergency services while the operation continues. Police said the motive behind the shooting is still not known, and investigators are working to establish what led to the incident.
Stade, a town with a population of around 50,000, is located about 40 kilometres from Hamburg in northern Germany.
Investigation underway
Police have sealed off the area as forensic teams examine the scene. Officials said more information, including the identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding the shooting, will be released after the investigation progresses.
Germany has witnessed similar incidents in recent years
Monday’s shooting comes after several major violent incidents in Germany over the past two years.
In February 2025, four people were injured after gunfire broke out near a courthouse in Bielefeld during the trial related to the murder of former boxer Besar Nimani. Two suspects were detained, and police investigated whether the shooting was linked to the ongoing court case.
Earlier, in December 2024, a Saudi-born psychiatrist drove a rented car into a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg, killing six people and injuring hundreds. The accused was later sentenced to life imprisonment. German authorities said the attacker had a history of anti-Islamic views and far-right sympathies.
The latest shooting in Stade has once again raised concerns over public safety as police continue their investigation into the motive behind the attack.
