Police arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Naushad Alam, who was on the run for several weeks following multiple allegations of extortion, intimidation, and abuse of influence. Alam, a former functionary of the minority cell in the Dum DumโBarrackpore organisational district and associated with the Barrackpore Municipality, was apprehended in Kashmir during a special operation conducted by the Detective Department of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate.

According to police sources, Alam had been absconding since early May after allegations surfaced against him. Investigators said he had not been seen in public since the announcement of election results on May 4, raising suspicions that he had gone into hiding.

The Detective Department launched an extensive search operation, gathering intelligence from multiple sources. By analysing mobile phone movements, communication trails, and other technical evidence, police traced his location outside West Bengal, eventually zeroing in on Kashmir.

A special team was subsequently formed to carry out the operation. Acting on precise inputs, the team reached the identified location and successfully arrested Alam.

Following his arrest, he was produced before a local court, and the process to obtain transit remand to bring him back to West Bengal has been initiated.

Investigating officers said the allegations against Alam are being treated with seriousness. He faces charges including extortion, criminal intimidation, and misuse of political influence.

Police officials indicated that he will be subjected to a detailed interrogation upon being brought back to the state. The investigation will also examine whether other individuals or organised networks were involved in the alleged activities.
