Hollywood star Idris Elba has firmly put to bed the long-standing rumours linking him to the iconic role of James Bond, insisting he was never actually in the race for the part. The actor made it clear that he was never in the race and that his name was completely out of the equation. He noted that the producers are opting for a younger direction for 007, wishing the team the best of luck and adding that he cannot wait to see what they do with the franchise next.

His comments come just as Amazon MGM Studios formally kicked off its casting search for the next secret agent. The studio has reportedly brought on board the highly acclaimed British casting director Nina Gold โ famed for her work on ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘The Crown’, and the ‘Star Wars’ franchise โ to find the right actor to succeed Daniel Craig. While Amazon MGM confirmed that the search is actively underway, it has kept tight-lipped on the specifics, promising to share official updates with fans in due course.

The upcoming film, currently operating under the working title Bond 26, will mark a major milestone for the franchise. It will be the first James Bond film developed under the Amazon MGM banner following Amazonโs acquisition of MGM Studios, alongside the continuing partnership with veteran Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson.

The studio has already quietly assembled an impressive creative lineup behind the scenes. Denis Villeneuve, the visionary director behind Dune, ‘Blade Runner 2049’, and ‘Arrival’, is set to helm the project, working from a screenplay penned by ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight. Hollywood heavyweights Amy Pascal and David Heyman are on board as producers, with Villeneuveโs partner Tanya Lapointe serving as executive producer.

The cinematic franchise, which has captivated audiences since Sean Connery first stepped into the role in 1962, has seen various eras led by Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan, right up to Daniel Craig’s recent five-film tenure that wrapped up in 2021. As for Elba, fans will next see him in the upcoming film ‘Masters of the Universe’, directed by Travis Knight.
