India’s ambition of hosting the Olympic Games has taken another significant step forward after the IOC confirmed the country among seven interested bidders for the 2036 Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) revealed on Tuesday that India is among seven countries that are interested in hosting the 2036 Olympics, with all prospective bidders invited to present their proposals to the IOC’s Future Host Commission next month.
India has been consistently echoing their intention to host the 2036 Olympics, strengthening its position as a major sporting country. After Indian athletes made huge strides at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, the nation is now aiming to establish itself as a major destination on the global sporting map.
IOC confirm India’s bid for 2027 Olympics hosting rights
The IOC confirmed India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics, confirming that it will decide after assessing several technical factors, including the venue master plan, athlete experience, and funding strategy, among other factors to produce long-term benefits for host communities.
“The Interested Parties currently in Continuous Dialogue with the IOC, with a stated interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, are (in alphabetical order): Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, Republic of Korea, South Africa and Turkiye.
“There are also a number of NOCs taking part in noncommittal talks with the IOC about hosting future Olympic Games beyond 2036. The Interested Parties have been invited to present their projects to the Future Host Commission in November,” a statement from the IOC read.
In which city will India host the Olympics?
Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is India’s preferred choice to host the global athletic showpiece and has submitted its Expression of Interest to host the Games in 2024. Notably, the country has never hosted the quadrennial sporting event, and it would be historic if it received the right to do so.
India’s negotiations for the hosting rights will be led by the IOA, in collaboration with the Gujarat government and the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs.
The IOC Executive Board will select its Preferred Hosts, whose bids will then be submitted to the IOC Session for the final vote to decide the host of the 2036 Olympics by mid-2029.
