After consolidating its political position in Jharkhand by forming the government twice in succession through alliances with other parties, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is now exploring the possibility of expanding its organisational footprint beyond the state.
ย
With Assembly elections due later this year in Assam and West Bengal, political circles are abuzz with speculation that the ruling party of Jharkhand may seek to mark its presence in these states as well.
ย
Although no formal announcement has been made so far, Chief Minister Hemant Sorenโs recent visit to Assam and his remarks to the media have fuelled such speculation.
ย
Soren, while interacting with media persons at Dumka Airport on Tuesday, hinted at the partyโs potential participation in the Assam and West Bengal Assembly elections.
ย
When asked whether JMM would contest the upcoming elections in the two states, the Chief Minister said the matter would be decided at the party level in the coming days.
ย
However, he emphasised that JMM has consistently fought for the rights of tribal communities and would continue to do so in the future.
ย
Referring to party founder and former Chief Minister Shibu Soren, Hemant said that his vision of a โGreater Jharkhandโ would eventually be realised.
Hemant said that Shibu Soren has always maintained strong connections with tribal populations living in different parts of the country, particularly in regions where their numbers are significant.
ย
According to Soren, tribal communities across these regions are familiar with and have faith in the JMM.
ย
Highlighting Assam, the Chief Minister pointed out that a large tribal population resides in the state and that the tea industry there is heavily dependent on tribal labour.
ย
He said that for the past 100 to 150 years, tribal people have migrated to different states in search of work but continue to struggle for recognition and identity.
ย
โWherever tribal communities live, they trust the JMM. If we can become a medium to raise their voice, there should be no harm in that,โ he remarked.
