Moving to a new city can look simple from the outside. Find a house, shift your things, and get on with life. But once the move actually begins, there are several smaller decisions and payments that come along with it. For one marketing professional, a recent relocation from Gurgaon to Bengaluru turned into an experience worth documenting after he added up what it took to get his new home ready.Shantanu Jain shared the experience in an Instagram video, where he spoke about the costs he faced during the move and the things he had to arrange after arriving in Bengaluru. His account has since drawn reactions from social media users who said they could relate to the experience.
‘I never imagined it would be this expensive’
Jain introduced his experience by talking about the move and why he decided to share the numbers.“I recently moved from Gurgaon to Bangalore, and this is how much it cost me. Hi all, my name is Shantanu, I am a marketing professional who’s trying to build a life beyond the 9-to-5. And maine kabhi sapne mein bhi nahi socha tha that Gurgaon se Bangalore move karna itna mahanga padega,” Jain said.One expense he did not have to handle himself was the cost of packers and movers, as his company covered it.The larger expenses began with finding and securing his new home.ID@undefined Caption not available.
The deposit became the biggest expense
Jain said the security deposit stood out during the relocation. After discussing the amount with the landlord, he paid ₹2.5 lakh.Explaining why this expense surprised him, he said, “The next big kharcha is rent and security deposit. Now obviously rent is standard, you will have to pay it, but security deposit in Bangalore is very different from rest of the country.”Jain said deposits in Bengaluru can cover several months of rent. He described getting his deposit down to ₹2.5 lakh after negotiation as a “very rare occasion.”
His Bengaluru apartment costs ₹40,000 a month
The home Jain chose was a two-bedroom apartment in a “slightly upscale society.”The monthly rent was ₹40,000. He also paid a similar amount as brokerage.
The societies came with separate charges
Jain’s expenses also included payments connected to both his old and new societies.He said he paid around ₹2,500 as moving-out charges at his previous society. The new society charged him ₹3,500 as moving-in charges.There was another payment for getting WiFi installed, which cost ₹2,100.
He had to buy a washing machine
The move also meant arranging things that he had not needed to manage himself earlier.One such purchase was a washing machine, which cost ₹21,000.Jain said that while he was living in Gurgaon, his clothes were taken care of at his brother’s home. After moving to Bengaluru, he needed to have his own washing machine.
Water filters and repair work added to the list
Jain also spoke about a few other things he had to arrange inside the apartment.Water filters cost around ₹2,200 per bathroom, and both bathrooms had installations.He also spent roughly ₹5,700 on electrical repairs and carpentry work.
