The Pakistan Super League is once again in the news after the recent episode between Mohammad Amir and Faheem Ashraf. This time around, it was regarding a pre-match segment that turned into a talking point ahead of the marquee clash between Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars. Notably, during the toss, the show produced a scripted fight between the two mascots, which drew significant attention, mostly because it was extremely unnecessary.ย
The brief act unfolded during the toss build-up, where mascots staged a playful scuffle near the pitch. What was designed as light entertainment quickly became the centre of attention inside the stadium and on broadcast, as players and officials watched on with amusement. Karachi Kingsโ David Warner and Lahore Qalandarsโ Shaheen Shah Afridi were seen smiling and reacting to the unusual start to the evening.
The commentary box added its own flavour, with Ramiz Raja steering the moment into full comic territory through live narration.
โWell, it is called the classico. We’ve got Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars at each other’s throat before the toss. And there’s a little bit of scuffle, I think, and nothing serious. I justโฆ donโt spoil the pitch, please. I think that’s enough. Enough, guys, enough. You can leave now. We can have the regular toss in now,โ Raja said, who was hosting the toss presentation.
Karachi beat Lahore by five wickets
He followed it up moments later with a playful reference aimed at Warner. โThere’s a little trailer for you, David. In case you didn’t realise the rivalry between Lahore and Karachi, we enacted one for you,โ he added.
Once the clip began circulating online, reactions split sharply. Some viewers criticised the league for staging what they felt was unnecessary drama ahead of an important fixture, calling the act overdone. Others, however, saw it as harmless entertainment and a creative way to highlight the intensity of the rivalry.
When it comes to the on-field rivalry, Karachi picked up a comfortable five-wicket victory over Lahore. Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafiqueโs half-centuries helped the hosts post 199 runs on the board, but David Warner led by example and a late cameo from Khushdil Shah got the job done for Karachi.ย
