Selena Gomez has opened up about her arduous mental health journey.

ย

In a latest appearance in a podcast alongside her record producer husband Benny Blanco, the singer-actress, 33, recalled being โ€œmisdiagnosedโ€ before finally receiving her bipolar disorder diagnosis.

ย

“I knew something was wrong, but I think I was misdiagnosed,” Gomez said. “People were just assuming, and I would try multiple therapists. And thatโ€™s why it is hard. It is actually really hard when weโ€™re talking about these things. And for me to go get a therapist, all of it is so f—ing complicated.”

ย

She further detailedย how finding the right diagnosis and treatments took going through “four different rehabs” and emphasised how important it is to remember that “you canโ€™t just give up.”

ย

Blanco, 37, noted that she still occasionally has โ€œmoments where sheโ€™s having mania and she doesnโ€™t know.”

ย

“Sheโ€™ll start to realise sheโ€™s having it after itโ€™s happening, and sometimes she doesnโ€™t even remember when itโ€™s happening,” Blanco, who wed Gomez in September, explained.

“Itโ€™s such a delicate thing because youโ€™re not supposed to technically talk to that person about it while theyโ€™re deep in it. And itโ€™s like, even dating her and sheโ€™s so hyperaware, sheโ€™ll be like, ‘I think Iโ€™m feeling a little manic.’ “

ย

In response, Gomez made it clear that those “moments of mania” are never something sheโ€™s ashamed of.

ย

“Iโ€™m not ashamed at all because I can catch them a bit quicker,” she emphasised. “But it is helpful to have a partner that will understand where the temperature is at and meet you where you are, and then you gradually understand whatโ€™s happening.”

ย

As time goes on and she continues to better understand how her bipolar disorder affects her everyday life, the โ€œCalm Downโ€ singer said that sheโ€™s been able to live her life more โ€œfreelyโ€ than ever before.
