Violent protests erupted in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, and other areas on Monday over the government’s decision to ban social media. The protests prompted the government to deploy the army and additional forces and issue shoot-at-sight orders, which ultimately led to the death of 18 people.
Kathmandu:
Nepal’s Home Minister, Ramesh Lekhak, announced his resignation on moral grounds after Monday’s protests, which resulted in the tragic loss of 18 lives, including more than 15 protesters across various cities, including Kathmandu. During a meeting with Congress office bearers, Lekhak described the loss as “unimaginable” and expressed his decision to step down due to widespread criticism of the governmentโs handling of the situation.ย
