Former India spinner R Ashwin has revealed that Chennai Super Kings explored multiple options to replace Stephen Fleming, with a current IPL team head coach among those considered.
Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin made a sensational reveal about the Chennai Super Kings’ hunt for the head coach, which was left vacant following Stephen Fleming’s departure.
CSK officially welcomed Zaheer Khan as the team’s new head coach on Monday, ending their frantic chase to fill the position ahead of the 2027 IPL season. Several names were rumoured to succeed Fleming, and Ashwin claimed the five-time IPL champions had also regarded Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra for the role.
Ashwin makes huge reveal
In a video on Ashwin’s YouTube channel, he said the franchise had conversations with several coaches, and Nehra’s name was also in the frame.
The ex-India spinner also opined that Nehra need not leave GT as he is running a successful franchise.
“There have been conversations with several coaches. In fact, if I’m not wrong, I think Ashish Nehra was also in the frame at some stage. Ashish Nehra doesn’t need to leave GT. He’s running an absolutely successful franchise in GT,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin further revealed that a few foreigners and two other Indian legends were also under consideration, but the deal fell out due to certain circumstances.
More from Firstcricket‘The choice of Zaheer is fabulous’
Ashwin also opened up on CSK picking Zaheer, saying he will be an excellent choice for the head coach role because of his cricketing intelligence and tactical understanding of bowling.
He added that Zaheer’s equation with Dhoni will ensure smooth coordination and a unified direction for the team.
“I think the choice of Zaheer Khan is fabulous. I do not doubt it. He ticks all the boxes. Smart man, knows cricket, knows bowling tactics well, and will blend in nicely. His relationship with Dhoni is very good. Besides, he is an Indian legend who can work with the boys…
“This will be a new beginning for Zaheer Khan as head coach. But it will be very similar. Dhoni and Zaheer Khan’s rapport is good. I think you can see the team going in one direction; there won’t be a need to pull here and there,” the former cricketer added.
Zaheer will represent the Chennai Super Kings at the IPL mini auction later in the year and in the upcoming IPL 2027 season.
