Congress leader Sachin Pilot on October 17 called for a change in governance in Punjab, alleging that the stateโs law and order situation had deteriorated, with killings, extortion, ransom demands and encounters becoming frequent.

During his visit to Moga district, Pilot met members of a victimโs family and said people across Punjab were facing severe hardship. He alleged that the family of a young man whose father was killed three years ago had received neither justice nor the assistance it needed.

Pilot said reports of murders and other criminal incidents were emerging from several parts of the state. He also raised concerns over drug-related problems and the circulation of illegal arms, arguing that those responsible for improving the system had failed to fulfil their duties.

โDrugs, illegal arms, extortion and broad daylight killings have become serious concerns in Punjab. There is hardly a day without reports of an encounter or murder,โ Pilot said, calling for the state to be brought back under control.

He said the Congress would offer support to the affected family and maintained that the people of Punjab would bring about the required change in the system.

Pilot also spoke about the murder of a Congress office-bearer, describing him as a young and hardworking party worker. He expressed concern that three years after the crime, most of the accused were out on bail and no substantial action had been taken against the main accused.

He said murder cases should be pursued through timely prosecution, witness and victim protection, and fast-track courts so that convictions could be secured without delay. Pilot added that families continued to suffer even after public attention moved away from a case.

Earlier on October 17, Pilot said he had met the family members of Parminder Singh โVickyโ, who was allegedly killed during a robbery and dacoity in a crowded market in June 2023. He expressed concern about the safety of traders and ordinary citizens and said efforts would be made to secure justice for the family.

In a separate post, Pilot recalled the September 2023 murder of Congress Block President and Sarpanch Baljinder Singh Bambi at his residence. He described Bambi as a public representative who had raised the concerns of people in his area and said efforts would be made to ensure strict punishment for those responsible.
