Jammu and Kashmir Police have constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the assassination attempt on National Conference President Farooq Abdullah during a marriage function earlier this week. ย

ย

The incident sparked widespread political outrage across the Union Territory and drew sharp condemnation from leaders nationwide. ย

ย

While Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questioned possible security lapses, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti expressed shock over the grave attack.

ย

Inspector General of Police Bhim Sen Tuti ordered the formation of the SIT, citing the โ€œseriousness and sensitivityโ€ of the case.

ย

On Wednesday evening, Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped death when a gunman opened fire as he was leaving the Royal Park Banquet Hall in Greater Kailash, Jammu.

ย

The attackerโ€”since identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh, known to the familyโ€”managed to approach Abdullah from behind and aim at the former Chief Minister. An NSG security officer intervened in time, deflecting the shot and overpowering the assailant.

ย

A pistol used in the crime was recovered from Singh, who was arrested on the spot.
