Former Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal was officially elected as the Bangladesh Cricket Board President on Sunday, June 7. Tamim was serving as the interim head of the BCB after the government had dissolved the BCB board of directors earlier in April.ย
The government took the decision to dissolve the board after a five-member investigation committee recommended action following its probe into allegations surrounding the BCB elections held in October last year. Meanwhile, Tamim has become the youngest-ever BCB president at the age of 37.
Tamim spoke on the turbulent times for Bangladesh cricket. “What has happened over the last one and a half years was not right. I will not blame anyone or point fingers. If we are to come out of this situation, we need everyone’s support – it cannot be done alone,” Tamim said in a press conference.
“The reputational damage that has been done must be corrected. If there are mistakes, discuss them; criticise us if necessaryโthat is your right. Through constructive criticism, we will be able to do better work. After eight years, I will once again speak with you regularly. I will keep you informed about my plans.”
Tamim said that heย proposed electing a vice-president, as Fahim Sinha was elected as one of the two VPs. The other has not been selected.ย “I myself proposed appointing a vice-president. That does not mean no one else will be appointed in the future. If the board feels it is necessary, we will certainly appoint others as well. For now, the board has agreed on this decision. We have elected Fahim Sinha with the unanimous consent of everyone.”
This came after the BCB called for elections after dissolving the Aminul Islam Bulbul-led body. The newly formed 11-member ad-hoc committeeย managed the boardโs affairs, with former national captain Tamim appointed to lead the panel.
The development follows a turbulent period within the board, marked by internal dissatisfaction and governance concerns. Multiple directors had already stepped down in recent days, signalling growing unrest. Sources indicate that a controversial episode during the T20 World Cup played a significant role in triggering the leadership change.
