TMC MLA resigns from party posts, joins Ritabrata’s rebel camp

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Madan Mitra on Wednesday resigned from all posts assigned to him by party supremo Mamata Banerjee, ending days of speculation over his political alignment. Mitra made the announcement while sitting beside Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Bandyopadhyay in the latterโ€™s chamber at the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Clarifying his position, the Kamarhati MLA said he continued to remain a member of the TMC but had โ€œmoved from one room to anotherโ€.

ย

โ€œI was in Trinamool, and I remain in Trinamool. I have only changed rooms,โ€ Mitra said, while confirming that he would attend the July 21 Martyrsโ€™ Day programme organised by the Ritabrata camp.

ย

The announcement came a day after Mitraโ€™s visit to the residence of Swarnakamal Saha, former Entally MLA and father of current Entally MLA Sandipan Saha, a prominent leader in the Ritabrata faction. The lengthy meeting triggered speculation that Mitra could be shifting his political allegiance.

ย

The developments also came against the backdrop of an Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into the municipal recruitment scam, in which Mitraโ€™s family members have come under scrutiny. The agency has summoned his wife and two sons for questioning.

ย

Saha was once considered a close associate of Mamata and had represented the Entally constituency after winning the 2021 Assembly elections. However, ahead of the subsequent election, the party denied him a ticket and fielded his son Sandipan, who won the seat.

ย

Following the 2026 Assembly elections and the TMCโ€™s loss of power, the party witnessed an internal split, with several senior leaders moving towards the faction led by Ritabrata. Several heavyweight leaders who had long been associated with Mamata’s political journey, including Firhad Hakim, Chandrima Bhattacharya, Aroop Biswas and Anubrata Mondal, were reported to have distanced themselves from the party chief.

ย

Mitra, one of the founding-era leaders of the TMC, had until recently maintained his loyalty to Mamata. However, his recent political activities following the ED notice fuelled speculation about his next move. With his resignation from party posts and public appearance alongside Ritabrata, Mitra has now emerged as the latest senior leader to join the growing factional realignment within the TMC.
