Vaibhav Sooryavanshi creates List A world record, misses another one by whisker during Tri-Nation Series final | Cricket

New Delhi:

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ripped apart the history books as the 15-year-old sensation slammed the fastest fifty in List A cricket during India A’s Tri-Nation Series Final against Sri Lanka A on Sunday, June 21. Sooryavanshi put the Sri Lankan attack to the sword and went all cylinders at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.ย

The teenage sensation broke the world record for the fastest List A half-century as he slammed a half ton off just 11 balls. He was in line of breaking another huge record but missed out by a whisker when he was dismissed on 94. The Rajasthan Royals batter was eyeing the record for the fastest List A hundred, but a couple of rare dot balls and his dismissal ended his bid for the record.

The record for the fastest century in the format belongs to Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk, who had slammed a ton in 29 balls for South Australia in their Marsh Cup clash against Tasmania. After a couple of dot balls, the best Sooryavanshi could have done was to equal the record when he was on 94 from 28 balls. However, he miscued one to mid-off as Sri Lankan captainย Sahan Arachchige got the Boss Baby for 94. The 15-year-old would also have been the fastest century maker for India in List A cricket, a record which is currently held by Sakibul Gani, who made a 32-ball ton during the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2025.ย

However, he could take pride that he broke the world record for the fastest fifty in the format. The previous record belonged to former Sri Lankan cricketerย Kaushalya Weeraratne, who had slammed a fifty off 12 balls.ย

Fastest fifties in List A cricket:

1 – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: 11 balls

2 –ย Kaushalya Weeraratne: 12 balls

3 –ย Thisara Perera: 13 balls

4 –ย Rory Kleinveldt: 14 balls

5 –ย Adam Hollioake: 15 balls

India A asked to bat first

India A were asked to bat first in the final of the Tri-Nation Series. This came after Sri Lanka A captainย Arachchige won the toss. “We are going to bowl first. We have played some games here, and the batting gets slightly easier in the evening. We have one change – Mohamed Shiraz is playing,” he said at the toss.

“We would have batted first as we haven’t chased a total in this series. We have played on this surface, and something around 300 would be a good total. We have made one change, Ashok Sharma comes in. Three pacers and three spinners,” India A captain Tilak Varma said at the toss.
