In a significant development in the aftermath of the RG Kar rape and murder incident in 2024, the mother of the victim on Thursday expressed her intention to enter politics, stating that she wishes to contest the upcoming elections as a candidate of the BJP.
ย
Speaking to the media today, she said her decision was driven by a continued struggle for justice and concerns over womenโs safety. The victim, a trainee postgraduate doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was raped and murdered in an incident that had sparked widespread outrage across the state and the country as well.
ย
โI had been urged to take this step earlier, but was reluctant. However, I now feel that to ensure justice for my daughter and address workplace safety for women, I must enter politics,โ she said.
ย
The grieving mother alleged that systemic corruption has hindered justice.
ย
โCorruption runs through every vein of this state. I have joined the BJP with the aim of uprooting the Trinamool Congress,โ she said, adding that she had already conveyed her interest in contesting elections to party leaders.
ย
She also voiced dissatisfaction with the ongoing probe, raising concerns about the role of the CBI, which probed into the incident following a Calcutta High Courtโs directive. She specifically mentioned grievances against the agencyโs leadership and investigating officers, alleging delays in delivering justice. Despite this, she expressed hope that entering politics would strengthen her efforts.
ย
ย
โBy stepping into public life, our fight for justice will gain momentum,โ she said.
ย
In a notable move, the victimโs mother also chose to publicly reveal her identity. She explained that earlier, the media had withheld her identity in compliance with guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court of India following cases of sexual violence. However, she noted that the Supreme Court permits adult survivors or their families to disclose their identities voluntarily if they choose to do so.
ย
While the mother has expressed her desire to contest on a BJP ticket, the party has not yet made any official announcement. Sources, however, indicate that she may be considered as a candidate from the Panihati constituency in the North 24 Parganas district.
