BCCI honorary secretary Devajit Saikia has assured fans that Rohit Sharma remains a stable part of Indiaโs ODI squad, dismissing speculation about his retirement.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has cleared the air on Rohit Sharma’s future in ODI cricket on Thursday, saying that his position in India’s one-day squad is stable and fans need not worry about his future in the game.
Rohit’s ODI future came under question after a member of the selection committee reportedly told him he wasn’t part of India’s future ODI plans during the England tour, as per PTI. It led to a major commotion among fans and pundits.
The report added that the Hitman was furious upon learning of the decision and had even agreed to retire after the England ODI series. However, his commanding performance in the final match effectively ruled out any immediate talk of retirement.
‘Don’t give fodder to speculation’
Speaking to the media after the high-level BCCI meeting in Mumbai, Saikia said that Rohit has been superb in all the matches and warned against giving any fodder to speculation.
“He (Rohit) is playing superbly in all matches. He scored 130 in the last match he played. So, what more do you want? Why is there speculation? I don’t want to give fodder to speculation,”ย Saikia said.
Saikia reveals details from BCCI meeting
The BCCI meeting was attended by Secretary Saikia, president Mithun Manhas, head coach Gautam Gambhir, ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, T20 captain Shreyas Iyer and Head of Cricket VVS Laxman.
More from FirstcricketSaikia revealed that they discussed the team’s performance against Ireland and England and have prepared a roadmap for the upcoming events. He also mentioned that the team would undergo certain exercises to perform well in 2027.
“We basically discussed how our team performed in England and Ireland, basically, and also what we are going to do in the next one year. So, the roadmap has been prepared, and we’ll be doing some exercises so that we have a very good performance in 2027,” Saikia added.
India’s next international assignment would be against Afghanistan in a three-match T20 series, starting on Sunday, September 13 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
