One of football’s greatest rivalries was momentarily set aside as Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo penned a heartfelt tribute to Argentine icon Lionel Messi, who recently competed in his final international match for the blue and white.
It was an emotional night at the Estadio Mâs Monumental as Messi competed one last time for Argentina. Fans and players were emotional as fireworks lit up the venue and a spectacular drone show honoured La Pulga’s legacy.
Even Messi shed tears during his final appearance for the national team.
Messi issues emotional message after final appearance
Following the Argentina-Benin clash, Messi posted an emotional message on Instagram as he wrapped up his international career with Argentina. He admitted he already missed wearing Argentina’s colours and reflected on his journey with the national team as an incredible experience filled with both triumphs and hardships, adding that every moment was worthwhile.
“Yesterday was my last game, and I already miss wearing the blue and white. I know I’m making the right decision. It was an incredible journey, full of joys and also some sadness, but I’m clear that every step I took was worth it.
“And I have many things left to say. It’s impossible for me to express everything I feel in words or in a post. This journey would have been impossible without my family, who was always by my side and supported me, especially in difficult moments when I needed it the most,” Messi captioned the post.

Ronaldo paid tribute to Messi’s outstanding international career, expressing admiration for his long-standing commitment to Argentina and the legacy he left behind.
“Leo, so many years defending your country and a history that will last forever. All my respect for what you have achieved with Argentina. A hug,” Ronaldo wrote.
While Messi has happily called time on his international career, Ronaldo is still active but is embroiled in a controversy which led to him abruptly leaving the national camp.
