Shubman Gill’s epic double hundred, joins elite list as India’s second-only batter to do it

Shubman Gill etched his name into cricket history with a stunning unbeaten 223 as India completed their highest-ever ODI run chase against the West Indies in Guwahati.

Shubman Gill clinched a monumental record in the second ODI between India and the West Indies at the ACA Stadium, becoming the fastest batter in men’s ODI cricket to score a double hundred with a breathtaking knock which rewrote the record books.

Guwahati witnessed an absolute batting spectacle, with both teams combining for a staggering 811 runs. The flat track offered little assistance to the bowlers, allowing three West Indies batters to score centuries and propel the visitors past the 400-run mark.

Chasing such a mammoth target was definitely a formidable challenge. But captain Gill and Rohit Sharma rose to the occasion with a magnificent 255-run opening partnership that laid the foundation for India’s record-breaking chase.

Gill smashes records

Gill scored an unbeaten 233 off 133 balls at a strike rate of 167.67, smashing 26 fours and eight sixes during India’s chase. The India ODI captain has scored the quickest ODI hundred of his career, using only 62 deliveries before converting it to a mammoth double hundred in the second ODI match.

The unbeaten 223 was Gill’s second double ton in ODI cricket, with the first one happening three years ago (2023) against New Zealand in Hyderabad.

Not only did Gill help India gain an unassailable 2-0 series lead, but he also became only the second Indian player after opener Rohit Sharma to score 200 more than once.

Gill admits being under pressure

Gill admitted that the team was under pressure despite the batting-friendly conditions and smaller boundaries, as chasing a 400+ target was never easy.

He also expressed satisfaction over India’s performance and was particularly pleased over his unbeaten performance, which helped guide them towards a win.

“I mean, at the halfway mark, 400 on the board, there was a bit of pressure on us. Never, no matter how good the wicket is, no matter how small the ground is, chasing 400 is never easy. So very pleased with the performance and very happy that I was able to stay till the end and finish the game for the team,” Gill said after the match.

The third and final India vs West Indies ODI match will take place on Saturday, October 3, at Maharaja Yadvindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
