Nana Patekar: Goa Police Register Unnatural Death Case



Goa Police have registered an Unnatural Death (UD) case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) following the death of veteran actor Vishwanath (Nana) Gajanan Patekar on Thursday. The case was registered by Panaji Police on Friday.

Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, provides for police inquiries and reports in cases involving suicides, accidental deaths, and suspicious or unnatural deaths. It replaced Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.

The police record states that the 75-year-old actor was brought dead to the casualty ward of Manipal Hospital in Bambolim from his residence at Ocean Park, Dona Paula. Further investigation is being conducted by PSI Nitin Naik.

Patekarโ€™s last rites were performed late on Thursday night at his farmhouse in Donje village of Pune district. Thousands of people gathered to pay their final respects to the actor, whose career included acclaimed performances over several decades. The cremation was held with full state honours, with mourners raising slogans of โ€œNana Amar Raheโ€ (Long Live Nana).

His son, Malhar Patekar, performed the final rites and lit the funeral pyre. Patekarโ€™s aides said the actor had wished to be cremated at his farmhouse.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to Patekar at Pune International Airport on Thursday after the actorโ€™s mortal remains were brought from Goa.

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, Union ministers Ramdas Athawale and Murlidhar Mohol, and state ministers Chandrakant Patil, Uday Samant and Madhuri Misal were among those present. Lok Sabha MP Sunil Tatkare, NAAM Foundation co-founder and actor Makarand Anaspure, FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, actor Jackie Shroff, filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala and director Anil Sharma also attended.

Several other prominent personalities from the film industry, politics, sports and social service sectors were also present during the farewell.

Patekar, known for films including Krantiveer and Khamoshi: The Musical, died at his residence in Goa in the early hours of Thursday. Doctors suspect that he suffered a heart attack.
